QR Codes on Book Covers

The US publisher Simon & Schuster is adding QR codes to the back jackets of their books and they hope to use the the codes to build direct-to-consumer relationships.
Will readers actually scan them however?
QR codes have not really taken the world by storm. While they were initially of interest to marketeers, their miss use (put simply in the wrong place) and a general apathy to scanning the codes has seen that interest fade.
When, if ever, was the last time you scanned a QR code?
If one was on the back of a book, along with a regular URL which would you do, scan the code or the the URL?
I know which one I would do!
